Vice Chancellor of Great Lakes University of Kisumu
Prof. Hazel Miseda Mumbo is the vice chancellor of Great Lakes University of Kisumu and is an adjunct faculty at Strathmore Business School. She hold a Ph.D. in Community Health and Development- her thesis was Influence of Entrepreneurial Behavior on Health Outcome among Community Health Workers and their Community: A Case Study of Kisumu East County from Great lakes University of Kisumu (Kenya), Master’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management (option) and Bachelors in Education degree both from Kenyatta University (Kenya) and post graduate diploma in Human Resource Management from Galilee College (Israel).
She is a director of Grace Onyango Foundation and Hon Treasurer on the boards of Terre des Homme foundation-Kenya (Swiss Humanitarian Organization) and FAWE Africa. Both organisations advance the place of disadvantaged children, women and girls in society. She was twice appointed by the President of Kenya to the commission that was to identify the chairperson and six members of the teachers service commission Kenya, in March and June 2021 respectively. She is a Community Health and Development and Health System trengthening Specialist with a bias in Human Resource for Health. Until 2017, she was the Human Resource for Health Development Expert with JICA OCCADEP project seconded to the Ministry of Health in Kenya. Previously, she was the Public Sector Advisor with Intrahealth International Inc. USAID funded FUNZOKenya Project econded to the Ministry of Health, Human Resource Development Department. Her role was to advise the Ministry of Health on Capacity building of Human Resource for Health in Leadership, Management and Governance, specifically looking at; Strategic Direction, in alignment with the Government policies and regulations in the Health Sector.
Prof. Hazel has conducted 50 consultancies in improving the Health Systems for various international agencies and the government of Kenya in the last 6 years. Some of her work as a consultant includes; developing a policy brief on task shifting and task sharing for AFRO region (2024), mapping out and accounting for Health specialists’ practitioners in Kenya and the capacity of health training institutions to bridge the gap for the Ministry of Health supported by WHO Country office in 2020. She was also the international consultant with WHO regional office supervising a study on the impact of COVID 19 on health workforce in 10 Anglophone countries in the same year, conducted a systematic review on Human Resource for Health Policy research for African Constituency bureau of
Global Fund that informed the focus of Global fund in their next project 2021-2026 and Human Resource Capacity Assessment to implement a project on Neglected Tropical Deceases in 14 counties in Kenya supported by UKAid.
