Vice-Chancellor & Principal University of Johannesburg
Prof. Letlhokwa George Mpedi is a distinguished legal scholar, university leader, and internationally recognized expert in labour law and social security. Currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg, he brings decades of academic excellence, research leadership, and institutional governance experience to the Primary Healthcare Congress.
Prof. Mpedi completed his B Juris (1996) and LLB (1998) at Vista University before earning his LLM in Labour Law (2001) and later his LLD in Mercantile Law (2006) from the then Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg). His academic journey has been marked by prestigious international engagements, including receiving the DAAD award twice to conduct research in Germany, and serving as a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law in Munich.
Before assuming his current executive role, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg. His career includes extensive lecturing, mentorship, and contributions to national and international conferences. He has published widely on labour law and social security in South Africa, Southern Africa, and other regions across Anglophone Africa. His recent notable publication is the co-authored book Labour Law in Ghana (2022), published by LexisNexis.
As an NRF B-rated scholar, Prof. Mpedi is recognized globally for his academic influence. His expertise in labour systems, social protection, and policy frameworks offers valuable insights into strengthening primary healthcare systems, particularly in the areas of health workforce regulation, social security mechanisms, and equitable access to healthcare.
At the Primary Healthcare Congress, Prof. Mpedi brings a critical cross-disciplinary perspective—bridging law, policy, and public health—to support transformative, people-centered primary healthcare reforms across the continent.
